Altra shoes guide: Lone Peak, trail, road and hiking shoes
Altra Lone Peak 9 and Lone Peak 9+
The Lone Peak is Altra's best-known trail running shoe, with a 0mm zero-drop platform, Altra EGO foam and the Original FootShape fit, Altra's roomiest toe box. The Lone Peak 9 has a 25mm stack and a MaxTrac outsole, and the Lone Peak 9+ upgrades to a Vibram Megagrip outsole with a ripstop mesh upper and no-sew overlays. Both come in men's and women's, GTX waterproof and Wide versions.
Altra trail running shoes: Timp 6, Olympus, Experience Wild 3 and Mont Blanc
The Timp 6 adds more cushion with an EGO MAX midsole and a Vibram Megagrip outsole on a zero-drop platform, built for long trail runs and ultras. The Olympus 6 and Olympus 275 are max-cushion, zero-drop trail runners with Vibram Megagrip. The Experience Wild 3 is a lighter trail runner with a 4mm drop and rocker geometry, the Superior 7 is a lightweight zero-drop shoe with a minimal cushioning platform, and the Mont Blanc Carbon adds a Carbitex carbon plate for speed.
Altra road running shoes: Torin 9, Experience Flow 3 and FWD VIA 2
The Torin 9 is a zero-drop daily trainer with P35X dual-density foam and a Vibram XS DURA outsole. The Experience Flow 3 is a lightweight road shoe with a 4mm drop, EGO P35 foam and a rocker shape, and the FWD VIA 2 is a max-cushion, 4mm-drop shoe for long runs. The Escalante 5 is a low-stack, zero-drop shoe for speedwork and everyday miles.
Altra hiking shoes and boots
The Lone Peak Hiker 3 is a lightweight, zero-drop hiker with a breathable waterproof membrane, made for fast day hikes and multi-day trips. The Lone Peak 9 Waterproof Mid puts the Lone Peak's 25mm-stack, zero-drop platform in a mid-height boot with a Hydroguard waterproof lining and a MaxTrac outsole. For more cushion, the Timp 6 Mid GTX and Olympus 7 Mid GTX use GORE-TEX membranes and a mid-cut for ankle support.
Zero drop and Altra's wide toe box
Zero drop means your heel and forefoot sit the same distance from the ground, which encourages a natural, low-impact stride. Altra shoes are built on a FootShape fit that gives your toes room to spread: the Original FootShape on the Lone Peak and Olympus 6 Hike is the roomiest, and the Standard FootShape is used on models like the Voyager, Experience Flow ST and Motiv FLX.
Altra stability shoes and wide widths
The Torin ST and Experience Flow ST add GuideRail, which gives gentle medial guidance for a more stable stride; the Torin ST is zero drop with a 30mm stack. For extra room across the forefoot and midfoot, we carry Wide versions of the Lone Peak 9, Lone Peak 9+, Torin 9 and Torin ST for men and women.
