Frequently asked questions
Merino wool or synthetic base layers?
Merino stays warm when damp, feels soft and resists odor, so you can wear it several days in a row. Synthetics like Patagonia Capilene dry faster and are usually more durable and affordable. Helly Hansen Lifa Merino combines both, with a synthetic layer against the skin and merino outside.
What base layer weight should I get?
Lightweight layers are best for high-output days and spring skiing, midweight is the everyday choice for most resort days, and heavyweight is for very cold days or people who run cold. Most Midwest skiers get the most use from midweight.
How should a base layer fit?
Close to the skin without being restrictive. Base layers move sweat away from your body, and they can't do that if there's air between the fabric and your skin. Sleeves and legs should be long enough not to ride up when you reach or bend.
Can I wear cotton under my ski clothes?
Avoid it. Cotton soaks up sweat and holds it against your skin, which makes you cold once you stop moving. Merino or synthetic layers will keep you much warmer.
