Smartwool guide: merino base layers, underwear and layers
Smartwool Classic Thermal Merino base layers
The Classic Thermal Merino base layer is 100% merino wool in an interlock knit, with flatlock seams to minimize chafing. It comes as a crew, 1/4 zip, bottom and 3/4 bottom for men and women. The 1/4 zip is one of Smartwool's heaviest base layer tops, made for cold weather, with a high zip neck for venting.
Smartwool base layer fit and sizing
Classic Thermal tops and bottoms have a slim fit that follows the contours of the body, so they layer easily under ski jackets and pants. The bottoms use a merino-covered elastic waistband, and the women's bottoms are mid rise, sitting at or just below the belly button.
Smartwool merino boxer briefs
The Merino Boxer Brief is made with ZQ-certified merino wool for moisture management, temperature regulation and natural odor control, with a double front panel and chafe-reducing seams. The Active Boxer Brief is the training version, also in ZQ-certified merino.
Smartwool Smartloft vests and jackets
Smartloft insulation is made from recycled wool for lightweight, packable warmth in wet or dry conditions. The men's and women's Smartloft Vest and the men's Smartloft Jacket add a merino wool lining and a wind-resistant shell, and the Smartloft Hybrid Jacket pairs an insulated body with breathable merino-blend fleece panels.
Smartwool neck gaiters, balaclavas and beanies
The Thermal Merino Reversible Neck Gaiter is 100% merino wool, double-layered for warmth with cleanly finished seams. The Thermal Merino Balaclava and Reversible Cuffed Beanie are also 100% merino wool, and the beanie is made from Smartwool's Merino 250 base layer fabric.
Smartwool socks
Smartwool socks have their own page, with ski and snowboard socks plus hiking, running and everyday socks. Smartwool socks blend merino wool with nylon for durability; the Ski Zero Cushion Over The Calf, for example, is 55% merino wool, 41% nylon and 4% elastane.
