Should I get snow pants or bibs?
Bibs come up over your chest with shoulder straps, so they keep snow out of your waistband when you sit on the hill, fall or ride deep snow, and they won't slip down. Regular snow pants are quicker to get on and off and easier for bathroom breaks. Snowboarders and powder skiers often prefer bibs; resort skiers are usually happy in pants.
Insulated or shell snow pants?
Insulated pants have a warm lining built in and are the easy choice for cold days and kids. Shell pants are just the waterproof layer, so you add a base layer underneath on cold days. They're cooler for spring skiing and anyone who hikes or rides hard.
How should snow pants fit?
Size them with a base layer on. You should be able to squat and lift a knee to your chest without the fabric pulling. The hem should cover the top of your boots and just brush the floor in socks, and the inner gaiters should fit over your ski or snowboard boots.
What's the difference between ski pants and snowboard pants?
Snowboard pants tend to be a little looser and sometimes have reinforced seats and knees for sitting and kneeling. Ski pants are often slimmer. Any waterproof snow pant works for both sports, so go with the fit you like.
