Is the Altra Lone Peak 9 the Best Trail Shoe Yet?

I’ve personally put thousands of miles on Lone Peaks over the past decade—through every version from the 2s to the 8s. And as someone who uses these shoes for real-world backpacking (not just gear reviews), I’m here to say the Lone Peak 9 is worth the hype.

What’s New in the Altra Lone Peak 9?

1. Reinforced Upper = Better Durability + Breathability

One of the biggest upgrades you’ll notice right away is the reinforced mesh upper. It’s lighter, more breathable, and built to withstand serious trail abuse—especially around the toe box, where older models were known to blow out.

  • Improved mesh for airflow and ventilation

  • More toe cap protection

  • Lightweight but rugged enough for thru-hikes

Note from Zach: People used to complain about toe durability. Altra clearly listened, and this upper is a direct response to that feedback.

2. Midsole: Stiffer, Snappier, and More Responsive

Still built on the Zero Drop platform with a 25mm stack height, the Lone Peak 9 keeps that signature trail feel—but it’s slightly firmer than the 6, 7, or 8. That’s a good thing.

  • EGO™ midsole compound with better energy return

  • Slightly stiffer for technical performance and reduced foot fatigue

  • Helps with power transfer on uphill climbs and descents

Zach says: This midsole upgrade turns the Lone Peak from a soft cruiser into a more technical trail beast—perfect for those long mileage days.

3. Outsole: MaxTrac Lugs for Serious Grip

While the MaxTrac outsole hasn’t changed dramatically in lug depth (still 4–5mm), the shape of the lugs is more angular now, giving you:

  • Better traction on wet, muddy, or rocky terrain

  • More stable descents and turns

  • Longer-lasting rubber—solving past durability complaints

Trail Tip: If you’ve worn your Lone Peaks down to the flat, almost slick bottom like I did with my 7s—yeah, you’ll love this upgrade.

 Familiar Feel, Better Fit

Wide Toe Box + More Locked-In Heel

Altra keeps that signature foot-shaped toe box that lets your toes splay naturally—but makes a key update in the heel collar, offering a more secure, snug rearfoot fit.

  • Less heel slippage = fewer blisters

  • Maintains natural toe movement

  • Especially helpful for steep descents and rocky terrain

Zach’s Fit Advice: Some people go a half size up, especially for swelling on long hikes. I’ve varied sizes across the years—best bet? Come try them on in our Toledo shop for a perfect fit.

 Backpacker-Friendly Features

  • Built-in gaiter trap (front and back attachment points)

  • Removable stone guard for customizable protection

  • Slight weight increase (11.3oz vs. 10.5oz in LP8)—but totally worth it for the added durability and features

Zach’s Take: You’re not cutting your toothbrush to save an ounce here. This added weight = smarter performance. Period.

So, Who’s the Lone Peak 9 For?

Whether you're thru-hiking the PCT, doing weekend loops in Oak Openings Metropark, or just want the most comfortable trail runner out there—this shoe is for you.

  • Long-distance hikers

  • Trail runners

  • Backpackers logging 100+ mile weeks

  • Anyone tired of cramped, unsupportive shoes

 Zach sums it up:

“This is the best backpacking shoe that has ever been created. Period.”
