Frequently asked questions
Should I get an insulated jacket or a shell?
Insulated jackets are warmer straight off the hanger and the simplest choice for cold days. Shells are just the waterproof layer, so you build warmth with layers underneath. That makes them more versatile but means owning a good midlayer too.
How should a men's ski jacket fit?
Size it over a base layer and a fleece. You should be able to reach forward and overhead without the cuffs pulling back or the hem lifting above your waist. Snowboard-cut jackets run longer and roomier; ski jackets are usually trimmer.
What waterproof rating do I need?
About 10,000 mm (10K) is plenty for most resort days. Go for 20K or more, or a Gore-Tex jacket, if you ski in wet snow and rain or spend long days out in storms.
Which features matter most?
Look for a helmet-compatible hood, pit zips for venting, a powder skirt and a sleeve pass pocket. Some brands make jackets and pants that zip together to keep snow out.
