Top 20 Most Important Items for Your First Time Backpacking – A Backpacking Gear Guide

Hey everyone, Zach here from Ridge and River! If you’re gearing up for your first backpacking trip, you’re in the right spot. Whether you’re heading into the Rockies, exploring the Appalachian Trail, or trekking in the Alps, the gear you pack makes all the difference.

After years of backpacking in all kinds of conditions, I’ve built a list of the 20 most important items that every beginner backpacker needs. Let’s get into it.

Shelter & Sleep System

1. Tent

Your tent is your home out there. Look for something lightweight, durable, and easy to set up. A solid 3-season tent is a great place to start.

2. Sleeping Bag

Choose a sleeping bag that matches the coldest temperatures you’ll face. Down bags are lightweight and compress well, while synthetic bags perform better in damp conditions.

3. Sleeping Pad

An insulated sleeping pad adds warmth and comfort. Don’t underestimate its importance, sleeping on the ground without one can get cold fast.

Core Gear

4. Backpack

Your pack needs to fit your body well and hold all your essentials. For most multi-day trips, a 50–65L pack is ideal. If you’re near Toledo, Ohio, stop by Ridge and River and we’ll help you find the perfect fit.

5. Water Filter

Clean water is non-negotiable. A lightweight filter or purifier is a must, whether you’re in the backcountry or traveling internationally.

6. Water Bottles or Hydration Bladder

I like to carry a 2L bladder for easy access and a backup bottle for flexibility.

7. Stove/Cook System

A compact backpacking stove makes cooking simple. The MSR PocketRocket, or similar options are lightweight and reliable.

8. Lighter and Matches

Always bring both for backup. Fires and stoves don’t light themselves!

9. Patch Kit

Whether it’s your tent, sleeping pad, or backpack. A simple patch kit can keep your gear functional when it matters most.

Clothing for the Trail

10. Merino Wool Socks & Quick-Dry Underwear

Good socks and underwear are non-negotiable for staying dry and comfortable. Merino wool is my go-to for its moisture-wicking and odor-resistant properties.

11. Hiking Boots or Trail Shoes

Footwear depends on the terrain, but make sure whatever you choose fits well and is broken in. Blisters can ruin a trip faster than anything.

12. Quick-Drying Clothing

Synthetic or merino layers are key. Avoid cotton, which holds moisture and dries slowly.

13. Rain Shell

Even if the forecast looks clear, pack a lightweight rain jacket. Conditions can change quickly.

14. Base Layers

For chilly nights or early mornings, a moisture-wicking base layer top and bottom helps regulate your body temperature.

15. Mid Layer

A fleece or puffy jacket provides warmth and is easy to pack.

16. Hat

A nice brimmed hat or maybe a beanie, depending on the climate, is a small item that makes a big difference. It keeps you protected from the sun or warm in cooler temperatures.

Navigation & Safety

17. Headlamp

A headlamp is essential for cooking after dark, setting up camp, or early morning starts. Pack extra batteries.

18. Trekking Poles

Trekking poles take pressure off your knees, help with balance, and are especially useful on rough terrain or steep descents.

19. Paper Map

Even if you’re using a GPS or app, always carry a paper map and know how to use it. Electronics can fail, but a map is a reliable backup.

20. GPS/Communication Device

For peace of mind, consider a GPS or satellite communicator like the Garmin inReach. It lets you check in with family or call for help if needed.

Final Thoughts

No matter where in the world you’re headed, these 20 essentials will set you up for a safe and comfortable backpacking adventure. When you’re just starting out, it’s easy to over pack or forget something important—this list helps you cover the basics without the extra weight.
