A Bigger Travel Pack for Longer Adventures
In this review, Zach takes a close look at the Cotopaxi Allpa 50L Adventure Travel Pack. If you have seen the smaller Allpa packs like the 28L, 35L, or 42L, this one is for travelers who want more space, more organization, and a more capable setup for longer trips.
For anyone traveling out of Toledo, Ohio, heading through airports, road tripping, or packing for a bigger adventure, the Allpa 50L brings a lot of useful features without feeling like a full backpacking pack.
Adjustable Fit and Backpack Carry
One of the biggest upgrades on the Allpa 50L is the adjustable torso system. Zach points out that it can fit roughly a 15 to 21 inch torso length, which makes it much more flexible for different body types.
The shoulder straps feel comfortable without being overly bulky, and the pack includes load adjusters to help pull the weight closer to your body. That matters when the bag is packed heavier for a longer trip.
Carry Features Zach Liked
- Adjustable torso fit
- Comfortable shoulder straps
- Load lifters for better weight control
- Hip belt support
- Backpack straps that tuck away
- Duffel style carry option
The hip belt is sewn in, so it does not fully detach, but it can be tucked away when you want to use the bag more like a duffel. The shoulder straps also tuck into the back panel, which makes this easier for car travel, trains, and airports.
Not a Backpacking Pack, and That Is Okay
Zach is clear that the back panel is not as comfortable or technical as a true backpacking pack from brands like Osprey or Gregory. It does not have the same level of spine shaping or trail focused support.
But for travel, it makes sense. This is a bag built for planes, trains, cars, hotels, hostels, and longer travel days. It is comfortable enough for that kind of use, especially if you are not trying to treat it like a backcountry pack.
Exterior Pockets and Travel Organization
The Allpa 50L has several exterior pockets that make quick access easy.
There is a small stash pocket near the handle that works well for a wallet, passport, phone, keys, or other small items you want nearby.
The laptop compartment is another strong feature. Zach fits both a MacBook Pro and an iPad inside with room left for cords or smaller accessories. For digital nomads or anyone working while traveling, that is a big plus.
Water Bottle Pocket
The side water bottle pocket fits a tall bottle securely. Zach notes that it feels stable and does not seem like it will fall out easily.
The drawback is that there is only one water bottle pocket. Zach calls that a con, and it is worth knowing if you like carrying two bottles or keeping one side open for extra storage.
Removable Top Pack
One of the more unique features is the removable top section. It zips off and turns into a fanny pack or sling bag.
Zach points out that this is genuinely useful for travel. You can wear it on your chest to keep valuables close, especially in busy places where pickpocketing is a concern.
It is also bigger than it looks. Zach jokes that you could fit a footlong sandwich and drinks in there, but the point is real: this removable pack gives you a lot of extra storage for daily use once you arrive.
You can also leave it behind and turn the Allpa 50L into more of a 40L travel bag if you want to cut down on size and weight.
Water Resistant, Not Waterproof
The Allpa 50L uses TPU coated water resistant fabric on much of the exterior. The front material has strong water resistance, but Zach is careful to clarify that the full bag is not waterproof.
The zippers and softer fabric areas are not waterproof. This bag can handle drizzle and normal travel conditions, but it is not made to be fully exposed in heavy rain for long periods.
Interior Layout: Suitcase Style Packing
Inside, the Allpa 50L opens like a suitcase instead of loading from the top like a traditional backpacking pack. That makes it easy to see and access your gear.
There are zippered compartments for items like socks, underwear, toiletries, toothbrush, deodorant, and smaller essentials.
The main compartment is wide open, which makes it easy to pack clothing, jackets, layers, and travel gear. Zach packed in multiple sweatshirts, base layers, a rain jacket, an insulated jacket, a fleece layer, and a windbreaker, and still felt like there was room for much more.
He says he could easily see getting three weeks out of this bag, and with efficient packing, possibly more.
Who the Cotopaxi Allpa 50L Is Best For
The Cotopaxi Allpa 50L is a strong fit for:
- Longer travel trips
- Backpacking through Europe
- Road trips
- Airport travel
- Digital nomads
- Weekend trips where you want extra space
- Travelers who want backpack and duffel carry options
It is not the best choice for serious backcountry backpacking, but that is not really what it is designed for.
Final Thoughts from Zach
Zach describes the Cotopaxi Allpa 50L as a backpack, duffel, and travel beast. It has a lot of storage, useful security features, solid organization, and a more adjustable fit than the smaller Allpa options.
