A Practical Look at Two Excellent Travel Packs

If you travel often, commute to work, or just want one bag that can handle both, the Gregory Border 30L Travel Packand the Patagonia Black Hole Mini MLC are both worth a serious look.

In the video, Zach compares both packs from the perspective of someone who hikes, backpacks, travels, and cares about how a bag actually feels in real use. Both are durable, water resistant, and carry on friendly, but they solve the travel bag problem in slightly different ways.

For travelers around Toledo, Ohio, or anyone stopping through Northwest Ohio before a trip, these are the kind of packs you can check out in person at Ridge and River in Perrysburg.

Exterior Durability and Weather Resistance

Both bags are built to handle travel well.

The Gregory Border 30 has a durable ripstop fabric with a water repellent DWR coating. Zach points out that Gregory knows how to make technical backpacks, and that shows here.

The Patagonia Black Hole Mini MLC uses the familiar TPU coated material from Patagonia’s Black Hole line. It has that slightly rubbery, water resistant feel that helps it shed moisture and handle daily abuse.

Neither bag feels fragile. Both are strong options for airports, road trips, commuting, and daily use.

Comfort and Carry System

This is where the two bags start to feel different.

Gregory Border 30 Comfort

The Gregory Border 30 has thicker, more comfortable shoulder straps. Zach also liked the AirCushion style back panel, which adds airflow and helps the bag sit well against your back.

That makes it a strong choice if you are walking through city streets, commuting to work, or carrying the bag for longer periods.

The one drawback is that the Gregory Border 30 does not have a hip belt. Zach did not feel like he was missing it most of the time, but for longer walks with a heavy load, it would be nice to have.

Patagonia Mini MLC Comfort

The Patagonia Mini MLC has thinner shoulder straps, but it does include a removable hip belt. That is a big plus if you load the bag heavily and want to take some weight off your shoulders.

The Mini MLC can also convert into more of a shoulder bag or duffel style carry. That makes it especially useful for travelers who want one bag that can shift between backpack mode and a cleaner airport or office carry.

Organization and Interior Layout

Both bags open clamshell style, which is a huge advantage for travel. Instead of digging through a top loading backpack, you can open the bag like luggage and see what you packed.

Patagonia Black Hole Mini MLC Organization

The Mini MLC has a simple main compartment with a mesh divider, plus pockets for toiletries, cords, documents, and everyday items.

It also has a dedicated laptop and work section with room for a larger laptop, plus smaller pockets for keys, wallet, phone, and accessories.

Zach sees this bag as more travel focused, especially for a digital nomad style setup. It can absolutely work as a daily backpack too, but its layout feels very airport and work friendly.

Gregory Border 30 Organization

The Gregory Border 30 feels a little more compartmentalized. It has a large clothing section, smaller secure pockets, a useful front pocket, and a clever spot for an AirTag.

Zach also liked that Gregory used the available space well. Instead of leaving large flat areas without purpose, the Border 30 adds extra mesh pockets and storage zones.

The bright interior color also helps you quickly see where everything is packed.

Water Bottle Pockets and Travel Features

Both bags have solid water bottle pockets that can hold a bottle about the size of a Nalgene.

The Gregory Border 30 also has a full luggage pass through, which Zach felt was a little more substantial. The Patagonia Mini MLC has a smaller pass through style handle setup, but it still works well with rolling luggage.

The Gregory also has front grab handles that are useful when pulling the bag out of a car, tossing it into an overhead bin, or moving quickly through an airport.

Size and Carry On Use

Zach notes the Gregory Border 30 comes in at about 21 by 13 by 8.5 inches.

The Patagonia Mini MLC is slightly smaller at about 20 by 12 by 7 inches.

Both are practical carry on style travel bags, and Zach mentions there have been no reported issues with the Gregory getting through TSA or being used for airport travel.

Which Bag Would Zach Choose?

Zach gives a slight edge to the Gregory Border 30L Travel Pack.

His reasoning is simple: Gregory makes backpacks, and the Border 30 feels like a bag built by a backpack company. The straps, back panel, fit, and structure all feel intentional.

That said, the Patagonia Black Hole Mini MLC is still an excellent option. It is versatile, recycled, durable, water resistant, and has the added benefit of a removable hip belt and convertible carry options.

You really cannot go wrong with either one. The Gregory feels more like a true backpack. The Patagonia feels more like a flexible travel and work bag.
